National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Brega Petroleum Marketing Company (BPMC) call for an immediate ceasefire in order to protect the lives of staff at the Tareq el-Matar facility, with evacuation proving difficult under current circumstances. NOC has issued instructions to employees to take refuge until the violence is quelled.
Eng. Mustafa Sanalla, NOC chairman, condemned in the strongest terms the renewed attacks, which have resulted in the injury of two BPMC firemen working to extinguish a storage tank blaze. Several artillery shells were fired at the storage tanks, in the process damaging a kerosene tank, as well as a water tank used for fire fighting. The injured firemen were later transferred to hospital.
Sanalla stressed that NOC’s priority is to evacuate employees, yet emphasised that material losses would be enormous. It should be noted that NOC and BPMC have repeatedly warned of the threat of attacks on storage tanks and the consequences of such heinous acts.
May God bless Liby
