NOC Chairman Affirms Libya’s Commitment to Cutting Gas Flaring and Emissions

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of NOC reaffirmed Libya’s strong and serious commitment to cutting gas flaring and emissions, especially methane. He said the company will achieve this by adopting global best practices, modernizing infrastructure, and improving operational efficiency. NOC also plans to use advanced technologies to monitor, measure, and control emissions in line with international environmental standards.

During his remarks at the opening of a consultative workshop held in Tripoli this morning, he said that NOC’s ongoing efforts to reduce gas flaring have already cut volumes by more than 100 million cubic feet by 2025. He added that the company is now nearing a total reduction of more than 180 million cubic feet by 2026.

He also said that Libya’s accession to UNEP’s OGMP 2.0 Methane Emissions Reduction Programme reflects NOC’s clear, practical commitment to environmental transparency. He added that the initiative will help preserve the climate and protect the environment while contributing effectively to the fight against climate change.

He praised the consultative workshop as an important platform for dialogue and for sharing experiences among the participating parties. He said it will help strengthen understanding of the challenges and opportunities in emissions reduction and methane management, while laying practical groundwork for future cooperation. He expressed his hope that participants will reach practical recommendations that support environmental sustainability efforts and help shape the future of the energy sector at home and worldwide.

The NOC is hosting the workshop under the supervision of the General Departments of Health, Safety, Environment, Industrial Security, Renewable Energy, and Quality, in partnership with the European Union Delegation and the International Methane Emissions Monitor of UNEP. Held over two consecutive days in Tripoli, it includes a range of sessions, from presentations of environmental projects to panel discussions, covering methane emissions management, oil spill response, and renewable energy.
