NOC Drives Effort to Reopen Zuwara Desalination Plant After Years of Inactivity

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) has finished the technical and mechanical work at the Zuwara desalination plant, including full cleaning and disinfection of the gas reduction and metering system. Gas has now begun flowing through the system from the Mellitah Industrial Complex, marking the plant’s second phase of operations.

This milestone is part of the preparatory and testing work needed to confirm that the gas reduction system is ready, evaluate the performance of its components, and ensure stable pressures and operating conditions. It also clears the way for the completion of the next commissioning stages and for achieving steady, reliable system operation.

The Zuwara Municipal Council expressed its deepest gratitude and appreciation to the NOC, Mellitah Oil & Gas Company, Sirte Oil Company, and Al-Inma Company, the project’s contractor, for their efforts in successfully completing the initiative and restoring operations at the Zuwara desalination plant after a hiatus of more than seven years.

The NOC continues to support the resumption of operations at the plant. As part of its strategy to help state service institutions, the NOC is making ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on liquid fuel. This includes providing the required gas supplies for power generation and desalination plants in Libya to help ensure the continuity of essential services.
